How a tiny-house couple used $35,000 to hack their 290-square-foot living space, rejecting minimalism and maximizing practicality

Tony and Charlie Perez love the freedom and simplicity that come with living tiny.

The couple have traveled to nearly 60 countries and lived in five, often doing volunteer work along the way. When they decided to move from Africa to California, they chose to make their new home base a 290-square-foot tiny house.

They built the tiny house in 2019 on a budget of $30,000, they told Business Insider. Later additions of a deck and awning brought that total up to $35,000.

Tiny-house living has a reputation as a minimalist lifestyle, but the Perezes wouldn't describe theirs that way. "We are practicalist ... if that's a word," they said.

Instead, they thoughtfully designed their tiny house according to what they realistically needed in a home. This deliberate approach helped them create a place that maximized space. It also took on influences from their travels. Learning from other cultures, they said, has been one of their "greatest joys."

Here's how they designed their home with practicality, not minimalism, in mind.

College student shares ‘crazy’ hack to get free food every single day of the year without fail: 'Kind of terrible'

It’s nice to snag a free meal every once in a while, but this brilliant college student found a way to snag one every single day.

Noah Wille shared his cunning solution to one of the financial woes many young adults face with his TikTok followers.

“OK, life hack that’s also kind of terrible,” he said in the video. “I really hope I am not the only person who is crazy enough to do this.”

Wille explained that he created a fake email account that he then used to sign up for free birthday perks from every single restaurant near him in Southern California.

He told In The Know that one day when he was “struggling a bit” with his finances, he pulled up Google Maps and made a list of all the places that sell food in his area — ultimately, that was more than 800 spots.

Wille then built a spreadsheet with the names of all those restaurants, narrowing the list down to only include restaurants that offered a free birthday treat of some kind.

After that, he assigned each day of the year to one of the restaurants, then joined each of their mailing lists claiming a different day as his birthday. It’s beautifully organized.

“I mean it’s probably not the most ideal scenario, but this way I can guarantee myself ‘dinner,’ whether its a pretzel from Auntie Anne’s or even just some ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s … it’s definitely been paying off,” he told In The Know.

TikTok commenters went wild over his idea.

“That’s on broke college student life,” one user wrote.

“Crazy? No. The future leader of the world? 100 percent,” another said.

“It’s actually not that bad because every restaurant is anticipating giving you one free meal per year. You’re not getting more than promised,” a third mused.

Wille told In The Know that having his video go viral has put him in a “tough position,” as he wants to share his ingenious spreadsheet with the world, but he wants to take care of himself, as well.

Story continues

“I’ve really wanted my social media to be a way to help people but I’ve never really been in a financial situation to help out that much,” he said. “I asked people to Venmo me what the spreadsheet is worth to them … even though it’s usually small it’s something that helps me help them.”

He said that even though the spreadsheet is specifically made for Southern California, he hopes the format and overall strategy can help people across the country afford food.

Modi hack: Twitter investigating apparent attack on account tied to Indian prime minister

© Prakash Singh/AFP/Getty Images Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends a ceremony to thank the Union Council of Ministers for their contribution in India's general election at BJP headquarters in New Delhi on May 21, 2019.

A Twitter account connected to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared to have been hacked Thursday, prompting an investigation by the social media company.

For nearly an hour, the verified account — @narendramodi_in — posted several tweets asking people to donate Bitcoin to another account.

"Yes this account is hacked by John Wick," one tweet read in part, seemingly a reference to the action movie character played by Keanu Reeves.

"I appeal to you all to donate generously to PM National Relief Fund for Covid-19, Now India begin with crypto currency," another tweet read.

All the tweets have since been deleted.

The Modi account, which has 2.5 million followers, is one of a handful of verified accounts connected to the prime minister. The one that was part of the apparent hack is connected to his personal website.

Twitter told CNN Business that it was "aware of this activity and have taken steps to secure the compromised account."

"We are actively investigating the situation," a Twitter spokesperson said.

India's Ministry of Information Technology did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The apparent hack comes more than a month after a massive hack that resulted in some of the most prominent accounts on the platform — including those tied to Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Elon Musk — being compromised.

In that case, Twitter said hackers targeted workers who had administrative privileges and then used their access to internal controls to send out tweets promoting a Bitcoin scam.

The origin of the attack on Modi's account is not yet clear. There's no indication or evidence of any correlation between this hack and July's incident, according to Twitter.

The chairman and CEO of SmartEquip bought a waterfront home in the Seven Isles neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale for $6.1 million.

Bryan Rich, and his wife, Judy, purchased the 6,071-square-foot house at 2325 Desota Drive from Moshe Manoah, principal and co-founder of Crown Holdings Group, and his wife, Nava Manoah, records show. Atlanta-based Crown Holdings is a real estate group that acquires and develops commercial and residential real estate in the Southeast, according to its website.

The six-bedroom, seven-and-a-half bath house sits on almost half an acre of land. It was designed by luxury interior designer Steven G. and boasts 160 feet of water frontage with room to dock a yacht, according to the listing.

Jodi Macken of Macken Real Estate had the listing. The home had been on and off the market since 2016, when it was listed for nearly $9.5 million. The house was built in 2016 and 2017.

Records show the Manoahs paid $2.4 million for the property in 2014.

Rich heads SmartEquip, a software company mainly catering to the construction industry. The company, based in Norwalk, Connecticut, was founded in 2000. Rich has been the CEO since 2010, according to the company’s website.

Last month, two high-priced waterfront homes sold in Fort Lauderdale. A Phoenix auto magnate bought the house at 1 Pelican Drive for $9 million, and a management consultant bought the waterfront house at 623 Middle River Drive for $6.8 million.

Haters gonna hate, right? The New York Islanders trounced the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 of their second-round series Monday night with a smothering 4-0 victory. But to hear social media tell the tale, it was the 1990s New Jersey Devils reincarnate doing the damage.

Those 'trap' Devils won three Stanley Cups from 1995-2003 and played in another final during that span (losing to Colorado in 2001), bogging down the neutral zone and crushing the spirits of both opponents and any fans that weren't die-hard New Jersey partisans. And while there is some connective tissue between the old Devils and new Islanders in the form of legendary hockey mind Lou Lamoriello, it's not fair to paint the Isles with such a broad brush - unless you're referring to their ability to win games.

True, the Long Island club has been a defensive powerhouse by surrendering a league-low 1.67 goals-against per game in the playoffs, but they've also been the best offensive team in the Eastern Conference post-season by tallying 3.33 goals-for per game. Overall, New York is fourth in offense and third if you cast aside the eliminated Edmonton Oilers, a team that only played four games total (and lost three of them).

Plus, this Islanders team cannot be accused of sitting back. New York dominated the first period against the Flyers, holding Philadelphia to just four shots on net while posting up 15 of their own. Yes, the Islanders can drop back and hold the fort defensively, but they also have a tenacious forecheck led by the likes of Casey Cizikas, Matt Martin and Leo Komarov, among others. This has always been a team that will hit you and grind you during the Lamoriello/coach Barry Trotz era. And while the Flyers dominated play in the second period, they couldn't get one past New York goalie Semyon Varlamov, allowing the Isles to push back in the third and seal the deal.

"We tried to come back to our game plan," said center Jean-Gabriel Pageau. "Put the puck deep and go win our battles down there. I thought we did a really solid job of that for the most part."

So how far can these Islanders go? They certainly made a statement in Game 1 against the Flyers and if they can repeat the performance three more times, they'll be onto the conference final to face either Boston or Tampa Bay - both formidable foes. The Bruins play excellent two-way hockey and have the high-end elements to burn anyone, while the Lightning are a different beast that is much more reliant on offense. But if Tampa Bay does end up figuring out the Bruins, their strategy would be much the same for the Islanders.

Having said that, it would be folly to count out New York at this point. The Islanders are getting offensive contributions from everywhere right now (Andy Greene scored!), including from team leader Josh Bailey and breakout star Anthony Beauvillier, the 2015 first-round draft pick.

"For us, that's something we take pride in," said captain Anders Lee. "Every guy going out there and playing for one another: it's a mindset and the culture we have in the room. We take care of one another and I think it shows on the ice. If we want to be successful, if we want to make a run, we gotta have everyone pulling the rope. Everybody in this bubble is extremely important to us."

The scary thing for Philadelphia is that the Islanders may not even have been at their peak in Game 1. Trotz noted that the two teams hadn't played each other in a very long time and that this first post-season meeting of the series was very much a feeling-out process. Now that New York has a bit of a handle on the Flyers, the vise could tighten even more. And while that may not sound very exciting for neutral hockey observers, it's very good news for Islanders fans hoping for a long playoff run.

Isles beat Flyers 3-2, move within win of conference final

TORONTO (AP) — Jean Gabriel Pageau scored the go-ahead goal 7:18 into the third period and the New York Islanders moved within one win of advancing to the Eastern Conference finals with a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night.

Brock Nelson scored twice, both set up by Josh Bailey, and the Islanders gained a 3-1 lead of the best-of-seven second-round series with Game 5 set for Tuesday night. New York is seeking to make its first conference finals appearance since 1993, when the Islanders lost to Montreal to six games.

Backup goalie Thomas Greiss stopped 36 shots in making his first start of the playoffs.

Sean Couturier and Ivan Provorov scored for the East’s top-seeded Flyers, who were coming off a 3-1 loss on Saturday. Philadelphia lost consecutive games for the first time since an 0-3-1 skid from Dec. 31-Jan. 7.

Philadelphia’s Brian Elliott stopped 30 shots in place of Carter Hart. It was Elliott’s third appearance this postseason, and second start.

STARS 5, AVALANCHE 4

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Radek Faksa had a goal and two assists, Roope Hintz scored the last of three power-play goals by Dallas and the Stars beat Colorado to take 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference semifinal series.

The Stars, who led 3-0 in the first period before Colorado had its first shot on goal, saw their margin cut to one before Hintz was patient with the puck about 7 1/2 minutes into the third period. There were only a couple of seconds left on a power play when he scored on Dallas’ seventh shot during that segment after initially waiting for some traffic to clear.

Dallas then got a gift goal only 32 seconds later when Avalanche rookie defender Cale Makar, who had scored late in the second period, tried to clear a puck from behind his own net and flubbed the attempt. Stars rookie Denis Gurianov knocked it in for a 5-2 lead.

John Klingberg had a goal and an assist for the Stars, who need one win to get to their first conference final since 2008. Game 5 is Monday night.

Valeri Nichushkin scored two goals for the Avalanche. Vladislav Namestnikov added a goal with 3.6 seconds remaining when Colorado had an extra skater on the ice.

Stars goalie Anton Khudobin stopped 33 shots. Pavel Francouz made 21 saves before Michael Hutchinson made his playoff debut and stopped three shots.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 5, CANUCKS 3

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Max Pacioretty scored twice and added an assist, and Vegas rallied for three goals in the third period and beat Vancouver.

The Golden Knights took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven second-round series. With a win in Game 5 on Tuesday, Vegas can eliminate Vancouver, the last Canadian team from the postseason.

William Karlsson, Nate Schmidt, and Chandler Stephenson also scored for Vegas. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves and earned his third win of the playoffs.

Shea Theodore added two assists, giving him four goals and 10 assists in the playoffs.

Bo Horvat, Elias Pettersson, and Tyler Toffoli scored for Vancouver. Jacob Markstrom, in his 14th start, made 28 saves in the loss.
